Hey, thanks for that wonderful read. I was just playing some ninja games and I thought I'd check this thread out.

MILWAUKEE -- Nearly a month into the season, Matt Garza got his first win for the Milwaukee Brewers against his former team, the Chicago Cubs. Garza, who signed a four-year, $50 million deal with the Milwaukee in the off-season, retired the Cubs in order in four of the first six innings. He gave up two runs and four hits while striking out seven and walking one over seven innings as Milwaukee defeated Chicago 5-2 Friday night. "Im just happy that I was in control of my mechanics all game," Garza said. "I just wanted to go and establish my game plan and not get too over-amped." Garza insisted facing the Cubs, for whom he pitched in 2011 and 2012, as well as part of last season, didnt generate any added emotion for him. "Its another game. Ive been on five different teams. If I had to get up for everybody, Id be tired by mid-season," Garza said. Brewers manager Ron Roenicke liked what he saw from Garza. "He really went after guys." Roenicke said. "His command was good. He had really good stuff today." Lyle Overbay homered and Carlos Gomez and Ryan Braun each had three hits and a stolen base for the Brewers, who have a Major League best 17-6 record. Garza (1-2) said hes enjoying finally playing on a winning team. "When you go through years of constantly hoping, you kind of run out of hope," he said. "Were going out with the attitude that we are going to win. It brings up a lot better emotion. Its confidence. That what were playing with a lot of right now." Garzas ability to keep pitches down in the zone made it tough on Chicagos hitters, Cubs manager Rick Renteria said. "He doesnt rattle very easily. He goes right after hitters. You have to tip your cap to him," Renteria said. Francisco Rodriguez pitched a scoreless inning to pick up his 10th save in 10 chances. Cubs starter Carlos Villanueva (1-5) gave up five runs and 11 hits in five innings. The Brewers when Cubs left fielder Junior Lake appeared set to make a routine catch of Scooter Gennetts line drive but the ball sailed past Lakes glove and rolled to the fence, allowing Gomez to score. Brauns single drove in Gennett, who scored as Lake airmailed a throw to the plate, giving the Brewers a 2-0 lead. The Cubs cut the lead to 2-1 in the third on Emilio Bonifacios run-scoring single. The Brewers extended their lead to two runs again in the bottom half of the inning. With Gomez on first, Braun hit a ground ball deep in the hole at short. Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro made a strong throw and umpires initially ruled Braun out at first. After a delay of two minutes and 20 seconds, Braun was ruled safe. Jonathan Lucroy followed with a single to score Gomez. Overbay led off the fourth with a homer, giving the Brewers a 4-1 lead. Aramis Ramirezs sacrifice fly in the fifth extended the lead to 5-1. Ryan Sweeneys ground-out plated a run for the Cubs in the seventh. Notes: The Brewers unveiled a statue of Hall of Fame radio announcer Bob Uecker, situated in the last row of the upper deck behind home plate, that pays tribute to the classic Miller Lite ad campaign in which he starred. .. Rodriguez tied Robb Nen for 18th place with his 314th career save. ... Brewers manager Ron Roenicke applauded Major League Baseballs attempt to eliminate the confusion that has surrounded the "transfer" rule this season by returning to the previous interpretation for when a fielder loses possession of a ball while trying to shift it from his glove to his hand. "I like what they did. I think it makes sense and it is the right way," Roenicke said. ... Chicago reliever Neil Ramirez made his Major League debut. ... All the Tigers have to do is win Sunday versus the Minnesota Twins in the finale of a four-game series at Comerica Park. They are one game ahead of the Kansas City Royals for the AL Central lead, and the Royals will close out their series with the Chicago White Sox this afternoon. A one-game tiebreaker is on tap Monday if needed. Tasked with pitching the Tigers to a division title will be David Price. He is 3-4 with a 3.97 earned run average in 10 outings with the club since coming over via trade with the Tampa Bay Rays. Price is just 2-4 in his past six decisions and did not factor in the outcome of a 4-3 win over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday, when he yielded three runs in 8 2/3 frames. Price has allowed 14 runs in his last four starts. The left-hander has faced the Twins 10 times (9 starts) in his career and is 4-3 with a 2.84 ERA. Price, the 2012 AL Cy Young Award winner, is 2-1 in three meetings with Minnesota this season. The playoff-bound Tigers have lost two in a row after winning three straight, and were hammered again by the Twins in Saturdays 12-3 decision. Minnesota recorded an 11-4 victory Friday, then kept it going in the third test of this set by rattling Detroit starting pitcher Kyle Lobstein. Lobstein gave up six runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings to suffer the loss and Nick Castellanos homered to go along with three RBI. Its frustrating for sure, Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said of his clubs second straight lopsided loss.ddddddddddddYoure in such a deep hole its hard to climb out. Ausmus and the Tigers just need to win Sunday, but the Twins are out to play spoiler before they pack up for the winter. Eduardo Escobar hit a two-run single in his second at-bat during a six-run fifth inning and also clubbed a three-run homer. Escobar finished 4-for-5 with six runs batted in, Chris Herrmann had three hits and an RBI and starter Ricky Nolasco tossed six innings of two-run ball for the victory. Its always nice to play the spoiler, Nolasco said, but we dont play this game to be the spoiler. We play this game to be in their position. Their backs are against the wall, so well see what happens tomorrow. Brian Dozier added a solo homer for the Twins, who hit 70 wins (70-91) for the first time since 2010, the last time they reached the postseason. Minnesota will hand pitching duties to Kyle Gibson Sunday and the right-hander has a 13-11 record to go along with a 4.50 earned run average. Gibson is aiming for his third straight win and made it two in a row with seven innings of one-run ball in a 6-3 victory over Arizona on Tuesday. Gibson, who allowed 15 runs in his previous three starts, is 7-7 in 17 road appearances this season and 2-2 with a 6.86 ERA in four career starts against the Tigers. In an 8-4 win over Detroit on Sept. 17, Gibson posted the triumph even though he permitted four runs and seven hits in six innings. He will try to shake up Detroits title hopes this afternoon. Minnesota is 10-8 against the Tigers this season. BOSTON -- David Krejci scored a second-period power-play goal and Chad Johnson made 22 saves for his second career shutout and the Boston Bruins earned a 4-0 victory over the last-place Edmonton Oilers on Saturday. Krejcis 12th goal of the season at 2:06 of the second period was enough for the Bruins to win for the sixth time in their past eight games and maintain the second-best record in the Eastern Conference. Dougie Hamilton, Carl Soderberg and Torey Krug scored in the third for Boston. Jarome Iginla and Zdeno Chara each had two assists. Johnson started in place of Tuukka Rask, who was pulled during Thursdays loss to the Montreal Canadiens. Edmonton goalie Ben Scrivens was coming off a scintillating performance against San Jose on Wednesday, when he set the NHL regular-season record for saves in a regulation shutout with 59 during the Oilers 3-0 win over the Sharks. Scrivens made 37 saves on Saturday. He kept them in the game again Saturday, but Edmonton had its three-game winning streak end. Acquired from Los Angeles on Jan. 15, Scrivens stopped all nine shots he faced in the first. But just 26 seconds into the second period, with the Oilers breaking out of their zone, Scrivens was penalized for tripping Brad Marchand just outside the crease, setting up Bostons third power play of the game. Scrivens scrambled from side to side midway through the man advantage, denying a pair of doorstep rebounds, but his shutout run ended at 126 minutes, 41 seconds when Krejcis shot from above the right circle was deflected into the net by Edmontons Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Hamilton netted his sixth of the season at 6:43 of the third when he scooped up his own rebound behind the net and swiftly slipped it past Scrivens right leg. Soderberg added his eighth of the season at 13:05 on a wrister that sailed over Scrivens glove, and Krugs 12th of the season came on a power play with 4:18 to play off an assist from Chara. NOTES: Veteran defenceman Mark Fraser made his Edmonton debut after being acquired from Toronto for two prospects Friday. ... The Bruins won their 12th straight against the Oilers, their longest active stretch versus any opponent. Bostons last loss came on Oct. 17, 2000. ... Captain Andrew Ference, who signed with the Oilers as a free agent during the off-season, made his return to Boston after spending seven seasons with the Bruins, helping the team win the 2011 Stanley Cup. Encouraged by Dustin McGowans start on Tuesday night at Kauffman Stadium, manager John Gibbons will hand him the ball again on Sunday in Pittsburgh and go with left-hander J.A. Happ on Monday in Philadelphia. "Well see where that takes us," said Gibbons. McGowan pitched into the seventh inning on Tuesday for just the second time this season. His spot in the rotation is vulnerable, with Gibbons on repeated occasions saying how much he values McGowan out of the bullpen. Happ, entering Thursdays series finale with the Royals, hadnt pitched in more than a week, a 2 2/3 inning performance against the Baltimore Orioles on April 23. He entered spring training with a spot in the rotation but posted a 20.57 ERA in four Grapefruit League appearances and missed time with inflammation in his back. His performance forced the Blue Jays to seek alternatives. Stroman, who turned 23 on Thursday, is coming off a 10-strikeout, one-walk, no-hit performance over six innings for the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons on Tuesday night. Along with Aaron Sanchez, he is considered a top pitching prospect and some in the organization believe he is major league-ready. GOSE RETURNS When the Blue Jays acquired Anthony Gose from the Astros on July 29, 2010, he was a hot prospect less than two weeks shy of his 20th birthday. Now, almost four years later, Gose is up for a second time this season and has been on the option train for a couple of seasons. Hes up when the Blue Jays need him and back in Buffalo when they dont. "Hes got to play and be productive," said Gibbons. "Its like anybody else. When it comes down to the big leagues its about production. Theres no secrets; you can hope guys are going to do something but eventually its all about production. Thats why its so hard to make it in the big leagues and stay for any length of time. Thats why guys come and go, bounce up and down. Big part of it is opportunity but when you get it youve got to take advantage of it." In 19 games with the Bisons, Gose is hitting .235/.350/.309. Hes walking at a higher clip than usual with 12 free passes in 81 plate appearances (14.8 per cent). "I think it was too cold for me to swing," Gose joked. "I wasnt trying to do anything different. I wasnt working on anything. I just walked a little bit more earlier on.dddddddddddd" He admits its difficult to get into a groove early in the International League season because of the weather. Games are often rained out; sometimes games are snowed out. "I think this year was much colder and a lot longer than last year, especially in other cities also," said Gose. "I dont know if its going to warm up. Its been freezing. I got here and its freezing too. Everywhere Im playing baseball its cold." ROSTER MOVES To accommodate the recall of Gose, the Blue Jays optioned infielder Jonathan Diaz to Triple-A Buffalo. Toronto also purchased the contract of infielder/outfielder Steve Tolleson. To make room for Tolleson on the 40-man roster, outfielder Moises Sierra was designated for assignment. The moves give the Blue Jays additional depth in the absence of Melky Cabrera, who was hit by a pitch on his left shin in Wednesday nights game and is listed as day-to-day. HIGH PRAISE FOR BAUTISTA Pointing out that Jose Bautista is good at baseball is a waste of everyones time. Nobodys splitting the atom with such an observation. Through the first month of the season, Bautista is baseballs leader in on-base percentage (.465) and on-base plus slugging percentage (1.065). His eight home runs prorate to a total of 48 over a 162-game schedule. Defensively, Bautista has one outfield assist and has come close on a couple of other occasions. His arm is feared by opposition baserunners. What arent so obvious to the viewing public are Bautistas contributions to game preparation. "Hes helped me out more than you can imagine, more than I ever imagined (he would)," said first-year outfield coach Tim Leiper. "When Im out there its like having another coach out there because number one, hes been in the league, hes seen everybody, he has great recall and he knows the game situations." When Bautista shifts to centerfield, which has happened in four games so far this season, Leiper jokes that his work day ends. Bautista takes charge and knows where he wants himself and his corner outfielders to be on each pitch. "From day one in spring training every fungo, every drill, 100-percent fundamentally correct every single time," said Leiper. "You watch him in the game, hes into every pitch, he doesnt take pitches off. Theres a reason why hes good at everything he does. Hes intelligent and hes into it. Hes as professional a guy as Ive ever been around." SAN ANTONIO -- Led by a no-frills coach, the San Antonio Spurs have long stated the regular season means little to them. Yet even normally stoic San Antonio couldnt hide its emotion on the court, and the satisfaction afterward, of toppling the two-time defending champion Miami Heat. Tim Duncan had 23 points and 11 rebounds, and the Spurs never trailed against the Heat, weathering a sluggish third quarter for an intense 111-87 victory Thursday. "Im sure this has some special meaning, to say something different would be silly," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said, "but we expect them to come out hard and play." In their first home game against Miami since losing a heart-wrenching, seven-game NBA Finals, the Spurs handed the Heat their worst loss of the season. The rematch brought out a raucous sold-out crowd and sparked high emotions from both teams. Players dived recklessly for loose balls and yelled at officials, while Popovich often screamed at his own players. "We needed a game like this," Manu Ginobili said. "Weve been talking (about it) all season long. Our record was probably 1-10, 1-8 or something like that against the top four teams in the league. So we needed a big one, and today we played well. . Its one of those wins that really gets you going." Tony Parker scored 17 points, including 14 in a wild first half, Boris Diaw added 16 and Kawhi Leonard had 11 for the Spurs (45-16), which has won five straight. Chris Bosh had 24 points, LeBron James added 19, Dwyane Wade had 16 and Michael Beasley 11 for Miami (43-16). James, who ditched the protective mask he was wearing early in the first half, was hounded by Leonard into shooting 6 for 18. The Spurs didnt do anything different defensively than they had in the past, James said, but the NBA did. The four-time MVP said the short-sleeved, tight-fitting "El Heat" jerseys Miami had to wear are not conducive for shooting. "Im not making any excuses, but Im not a big fan of the jerseys," James said. "So I have to figure something out next time I have to wear the short-sleeve jerseys. Every time I shoot, it feels like its just pulling right up underneath my arm. I already dont have much room for error on my jump shot anyways, so its definitely not a good thing." James got rid of the mask that protected his broken nose with four minutes left in the first quarter. "I dont like it," James said. "Its that simple; just got frustrated with it early on so I took it off. It didnt help me, taking it off. Its probably a game-to-game thing." He missed his first two attempts sans mask, tossing up a wild 14-footer that banged off the front of the rim and backboard, then botching a reverse layup. His first mask-free basket was a 5-foot running floater over Leonard with 6:26 left in the half. "(Leonard) was a pest," Duncan said. "Thats what we need him to be. He stuck his hand in there, knocked some balls away, got some steals, he contested shots. I think he did a great job overall in every aspect." The Spurs opened the fourth quarter on a 13-6 run, returning to the breakneck attack that led to a 17-point lead in the first half. Duncans 18-foot jumper gave San Antonio a 99-85 lead with 3:00 remaining, drawing a fist-pounding of the scorers table by Manu Ginobili as he waited to enter the game. The closing run was needed after the Heat kept the Spurs out of the paint early in the second half, to the point Popovich screamed, "Tony! Attack!" after his All-Star point guard walked the ball up midway through the third period. Miami turned up the heat defensively, closing quickly on every pass. San Antonio was 7 for 22 from the field in the third quarter. Miami was 10 for 18 in the quarter, with James, Wade and Bosh scoring six points each. Miami had cut the lead to 79-74 with 2:00 left in the third period, but could get no closer. "They are difficult to guard," Wade said. "They have a great system and they have a very unselfish team. That is why they are one of the better teams in the league. Thy stay true to their system and believe in it." Parker showed no signs of the lower body problems that sidelined him six games last month, driving unrestrained into the paint. Parker played all but the final two minutes of the first quarter, going 5 for 6 from the field in scoring 10 points and dishing out three assists. "Tonys our setup guy," Duncan said. "He runs our team, he sets our pace, sets our rhythm and he played the right way tonight." NOTES: The Spurs Jeff Ayres (sprained right hand) sat out for the second time in the last three games. Ayres has started 10 games. ... Miami received a rousing ovation when it took the court for pregame warmups, but was booed lustily during introductions. ... James glared at official Kevin Scott after drawing consecutive fouls, starting with a charge. He was mum when he drove headlong into Duncan for his third foul of the quarter and fourth overall. Clearance Puma Shoes . "Yes, Id like to get them in," Detroits rookie manager said. "Mother Natures going to have a say in that." Sure enough, the Tigers had their game against the Kansas City Royals postponed because of rain on Thursday. The NFL Combine is a perfect time to impress scouts with impressive workout numbers, and two potential Top 5 picks have done just that over the weekend in Indianapolis. While the spotlight has been on potential first overall draft pick Jadeveon Clowney and his 40-yard time, and top quarterback prospect Blake Bortles during the throwing drills, top prospects Greg Robinson and Sammy Watkins have impressed scouts enough to solidify or even boost their spots on draft boards. Robinson, a 65 and 320 pound offensive tackle from Auburn, ran a blistering (relatively speaking) 4.84 40-yard dash. To listen to the chatter in Indy this weekend tell it, Robinsons stock is soaring to the point where he may have overtaken Texas A&Ms Jake Matthews as the top OT in the draft. Watkins meanwhile, ran a very impressive 40-yard dash himself, clocking in at 4.34 and 4.37. The 61, 205 pound receiver from Clemson has separated himself from Marqise Lee and others as the clear-cut top pass catcher in this years draft. Respected draftnik Mike Mayock of NFL Network has gone so far to say Watkins he thinks Watkins is a franchise receiver. The junior could go as high as second overall to the St. Louis Rams. Other players who helped their cause over the weekend include Texas A&M receiver Mike Evans and Fresno State Derek Carr.ddddddddddddEvans has been somewhat of a forgotten man sitting behind Watkins and Lee on draft boards at the receiver position. But after putting up some strong numbers to go along with his freakish wingspan, could see the redshirt sophomore finish the weekend on Lees tail for second receiver to be taken. After a poor showing in the Las Vegas Bowl dropped Carr out of the first-round in many draftniks minds and mock drafts, Carr has done some tremendous damage control in the off-season. Starting with the Senior Bowl and continuing this weekend at the Combine, Carrs performances have boosted his stock back into the first round and perhaps as high as the Top 10. The Minnesota Vikings, picking eighth overall and in need of a quarterback, could take a long look at the senior if the top three – Teddy Bridgewater, Johnny Manziel, and Bortles – are off the board. And speaking of Manziel, the exciting quarterback spent most of the weekend trying to prove to teams hes more Johnny Manziel than Johnny Football, but in the tests he went through, he impressed for the most part. Manziels 40-yard time of 4.68 was strong and while he measured in a little short for most teams liking – a shade under 60 – his hand size was certainly NFL caliber. Beaminster / The two teams face off again Sunday afternoon in A
« Last post by miaowang123 on January 11, 2019, 01:39:46 AM »
While the Tampa Bay Lightning seek to match a season-high five-game win streak set from Dec. 15-23, the Ottawa Senators will by hoping to avoid going five straight games without a victory for the first time since a 0-3-2 drought from Oct. 25-Nov. 3 when the two teams meet Thursday night. Ottawa is 0-2-2 in its last four games and sits seven points back of the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. The Senators lost their fourth in a row at home with Tuesdays 8-4 setback to the New York Rangers. Both Ottawa goaltenders struggled, with starter Robin Lehner stopping just 23-of-28 shots in his third straight start. Nathan Lawson made 10-of-12 saves in relief during the third period before exiting with an injury and forcing Lehner back into the game. Mike Hoffman, Mika Zibanejad, Milan Michalek and Bobby Ryan all had goals for the Senators. "I think were generating some offense but, again, were turning over the puck and putting our goalie in a tough spot and they havent been able to make the save," said Senators coach Paul MacLean. "We have to work to get open, we have to play for one another and we have to find them when theyre open." With No. 1 goaltender Craig Anderson still out with a bruised left shoulder and Lawson now day-to-day with a lower-body issue, the Senators recalled netminder Andrew Hammond from the minors. The Senators lost their first two meetings with the Lightning this season, both in Tampa, before handing the Bolts a fifth straight loss in Ottawa with a 5-3 decision on Jan. 30. Ryan and Kyle Turris both had a goal and an assist, while Anderson made 35 saves. The Lightning meanwhile, will try to match their longest winning streak of the season. The Lightning have followed up a five-game losing streak by winning four straight, including Wednesdays big divisional meeting with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Steven Stamkos notched a natural hat trick in the 5-3 victory, giving him five goals in his last four games. The forward has 19 goals and 30 points in just 24 games this season, having missed time with a broken leg. Stamkos had a solid homecoming, posting his second hat trick of the season and seventh of his career. "There might have been a little extra energy coming back home and playing this game in front of family and friends," Stamkos, a native of nearby Markham, Ontario said. "Especially with the magnitude of the game and how tight we are in the playoff race." Radko Gudas and Tyler Johnson had goals, Ryan Malone and Valtteri Filppula notched two assists each and Ben Bishop came up with 36 saves, including 21 in the third period. The game did see a scary incident in the final seconds of the first period when Tampa forward Alex Killorn was issued a major for boarding and a game misconduct for a hit on Leafs defenseman Paul Ranger. Ranger was immobilized and removed from the arena on a stretcher. He was taken to a local hospital for observation, and the Leafs stated later that Ranger was in stable condition, conscious and alert. "Pretty unfortunate," Killorn said. "Happy that he is OK. I heard through the PR and stuff that he is doing all right now. Its kind of a scary moment, one of those plays where I commit to hit someone without knowing if they are going to turn, so its just an unfortunate play." The victory moved the Lightning into a tie with the Montreal Canadiens for second place in the Atlantic Division with 83 points. That is three ahead of the fourth-place Maple Leafs. Both Bishop and Filppula suffered injuries in that meeting for the Lighting. Jones goal at 7:32 of the third gave the Heat a two-goal lead. The Barons scored late, but the Heat (40-25-7) hung on for the win. Brett Olson and Derek Smith scored on the Heats first two shots of the game. Matthew Ford and Taylor Fedun scored for the Barons (33-28-11), who slipped to eighth-place with the loss. Richard Bachman made 16 saves. Joni Ortio stopped 35 shots, including a toe save in close off Ford, the Barons leading goal scorer, with seconds to play. Abbotsford has won six of its past eight games, improving its chances of catching Chicago for fourth in the Western Conference. Olson opened the scoring just 90 seconds into the game after Corey Locke skated around a defender at the blue-line and fed him the puck down low. Olson took the pass off his skate and backhanded the puck over a sprawling Bachman for his 16th of the season. Brett Kulak picked up the second assist on the play for his first career AHL point. Smith made it 2-0 at 5:34, blasting a slap shot from just across the blue-line between the legs of Bachman. The Barons pusheed to get on the board but were denied.dddddddddddd Ortio robbed Juhjar Khaira in close on a rebound attempt. Then the Finnish netminder made a pad stop off Darnell Nurse on a backdoor play. Shots were 12-3 for the visiting Barons at the 14-minute mark of the period. The Barons finally solved Ortio at 5:37 of the second period on the power play as Ford deflected C.J. Stretchs wrist shot in midair, for his team-high 24th goal. Oklahoma City thought they tied it at 11:06, but the goal was immediately waved off because Andrew Miller kicked the puck in. Moments later Roman Horak was sent in on a breakaway by Miller, but the former Heat forward was stonewalled by Ortio. Jones restored the two-goal cushion for Abbotsford, taking a drop pass from Ben Street and ripping a shot blocker side for his 16th of the season. LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Russ Smith really didnt care about being top scorer in his home finale with Louisville because passing to open teammates was the better choice. The star guard is showing he can be pass-first when needed. Just ask Cardinals forward Montrezl Harrell, who scored 20 points while Smith recorded a career-high 13 assists as No. 11 Louisville routed No. 19 Connecticut 81-48 on Saturday to claim a share of the American Athletic Conference championship. The Cardinals (26-5, 15-3) finished tied with No. 15 Cincinnati atop the league. A postgame coin flip went to Cincinnati and left Louisville with the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament. The Cardinals still got to hoist a trophy thanks to Smiths generosity. "Russ does so much for our team," said Harrell, who added 11 rebounds and several thunderous dunks. "He doesnt just worry about scoring. He had like (three) points tonight and 13 assists, so how does he not make us better? ... Right now, hes just worried about us winning, and thats what we need." Smiths performance was appreciated by a sellout crowd that gave him a standing ovation as he went to the bench with 4:22 left in the game. The reception capped a joyous day as he and fellow seniors Luke Hancock, Tim Henderson and Stephan Van Treese were honoured as the programs winningest class. Their achievements included winning last years NCAA championship. All played key roles in Saturdays 116th win together. Smith made just one of two shots but topped his previous assist high by two. Hancock added 16 points while Henderson added an early basket on feeds from Smith. Van Treese grabbed 13 rebounds. "It was just getting the ball to my teammates to get the ball movement going," said Smith, whose audience included nine NBA scouts. "When I looked at the film after the first UConn game, I was very sloppy with the rock. I wasnt handling the ball as well as I should have. I negated any discrepancy about turning the ball over. I just kicked it out to other teammates." Louisvilles defence, meanwhile, frustrated the Huskies (24-7, 12-6) into season lows in scoring and shooting (29.4 per cent) in completing the sweep. Their previous shooting low was 29.6 per cent in a loss to SMU. "I didnt see anything like this coming," said UConn coach Kevin Ollie, whose team still earned the No. 4 seed. "And Im glad it came because now we know how tough we have to be to be a champion. "We werent tough enough. We werent together enough. Louisville took every opportunity to take advantage of it. ... Thats what champions do." Wayne Blackshear added 11 points and Chris Jones 10 as Louisville won this matchup between two of the past three NCAA champions. While the defending champion Cardinals werent always smooth in beating the Huskies, they shot 45 per cent (26 of 58) from the field and mounted a couple of second-half runs to put the game out of reach. DeAndre Daniels 17 points led UConn, which had its four-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 0-4 at the KFC Yum! Center. Senior guard Shabazz Napier managed nine points on 2-of-13 shooting just days after scoring 26 points including a career-best seven 3-pointers in a win over Rutgers, Emotion preceded the game as Louisville honoured the seniors who helped earn the schools third national championship last spring. Smith as expected drew the loudest cheers from a red-clad sellout crowd as a montage of his and teammates shining moments was played on the video screen, which included a shout-out from rapper Pit Bull. Louisvilles 30-18 lead at the break eventually grew to 34 with 91 seconds left to put fitting end to a fond farewell to the seniors -- especially Smith. "Its a special class because for four years they totally did things for all the right reasons," Louisville coach Rick Pitino said. Of Smith, he added, "how would you ever imagine Russ Smith knowing on Senior Night he would pass up all opportunities to score and get 13 assists? That shows you how much hes grown. If any pro scouts wondered tonight whether he could be a point guard, I think the thing is all closed." William Jackson Jersey . It was well worth the wait. Team officials did not indicate the extent of the injury Saturday, simply listing Rose with "left knee soreness." Rose has played two preseason games without any sign of problems. The first NBA game in South America now will be missing its biggest star.JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Jaguars have gone from the worst team in the NFL to the hottest team in the AFC. And theyre enjoying it. Chad Henne threw two touchdown passes, Jordan Todman scored on some trickery and the Jaguars held on to beat the Houston Texans 27-20 on Thursday night. The Jaguars (4-9) won their third straight -- their fourth victory in five games since a bye -- and continued to show signs of progress under first-year coach Gus Bradley. They have the longest winning streak in the AFC. "Four out of five, yeah, youre feeling good," Henne said. Jacksonville also won at home for the first time since Nov. 25, 2012, against Tennessee. "Our guys just really believe," Bradley said. "The biggest challenge is to keep doing what were doing. Were a young team thats learning how to do this." Houston (2-11) extended its franchise-record losing streak to 11 games, a stunning stretch of futility that could lead the franchise to fire coach Gary Kubiak. "Its been a gut-wrenching experience," said Kubiak, whose team has lost eight games by seven points or less. "Weve been in so many close games." Kubiak and the Texans looked as if they would end the streak after a quarterback change, but Geno Hayes intercepted Matt Schaubs pass with 2:08 remaining to seal Jacksonvilles first series sweep since 2009. Schaub came off the bench and carved up Jacksonvilles secondary in the second half. He replaced starter Case Keenum late in the third quarter and led the team to a touchdown and a field goal in his first two possessions. The Texans were in the red zone again, but failed to convert a fourth-down play with 3:37 remaining. Jacksonville picked up a huge first down that flipped the field -- not surprising that it came on a penalty -- but punted. Hayes picked off Schaubs next pass, a floater over the middle. The Jaguars milked the clock from there, and Josh Scobees 39-yard field goal provided some insurance. The Texans had one final chance -- they needed to go 77 yards in 20 seconds and without a timeout -- but Schaub was sacked to end the game. Jacksonville players ran on the field to celebrate. "For what theyve gone through and to stick to it and have some results go their way, its pretty cool," Bradley said. "Our team continues to show that theyre sticking to it, believing and making plays at critical times." Schaub completed 17 of 29 passes for 198 yards, with a touchdown and an interception. Andre Johnson caught 13 passes for 154 yards. Still, the Texans walked off the field with an all-too-familiar feeling. Turnovers were a problem again for Kubiaks team. Penalties were an even bigger problem. Houston was flagged 14 times for a team-reecord 177 yards -- many of them extending drives.dddddddddddd "They were huge penalties," Kubiak said. "Thats on me. Its ridiculous. Its inexcusable. It cant happen." Jacksonvilles opponents might want to start expecting trick plays. Offensive co-ordinator Jedd Fisch dialed up a double pass that led to a score and a 24-10 lead in the third quarter. Henne threw behind the line of scrimmage to receiver Ace Sanders, who then heaved a deep ball across the field to running back Todman. No defender was near Todman as he camped under Sanders throw. Rookie D.J. Swearinger pushed Todman just as he hauled in the 21-yard TD reception. It was the second consecutive week a non-quarterback threw a TD pass for Jacksonville. Maurice Jones-Drew tossed an 8-yard score to college teammate Marcedes Lewis in a 32-28 win at Cleveland last week. Sanders and Jones-Drew now have as many TD passes this season as benched Jaguars starter Blaine Gabbert. Henne completed 12 of 27 passes for 117 yards. He hooked up with Lewis for a 1-yard scoring strike in the first quarter and found Cecil Shorts III for a 6-yarder in the second. The Jaguars took the opening kickoff and drove 80 yards for the teams fourth opening-drive touchdown in its last five games. Houston punted on its first three possessions, creating more momentum for the home team. Hennes second TD pass gave Jacksonville its largest lead (14 points) of the season. Henne hit Shorts out of bounds on a second-down play, but went right back to his leading receiver on the next snap. Shorts beat Johnathan Joseph on a quick out. Jones-Drew carried 14 times for a season-high 103 yards. He left the game late in the fourth with a hamstring injury, but said he would be fine. The Jaguars are enjoying a modest turnaround after starting the season 0-8. Two victories came against Houston, including a 13-6 punt-fest 11 days ago. "Its been amazing," Jones-Drew said. "Gus has done a great job." The Texans managed a season-low 218 yards in that one, prompting some players to apologies to the city. Johnson called it the "lowest point" of his 11-year career. What will they say now? Another loss surely will increase the possibility of changes in Houston, which improved its chances of landing the No. 1 pick in the 2014 NFL draft. Notes: Jaguars S Chris Prosinski (head) left the game and did not return. ... Jaguars PK Josh Scobee is 19 of 21 on field goals this season, getting one blocked and missing a 60-yarder. ... Texans were 2 for 5 in the red zone, continuing a season-long trend. Another loss surely will increase the possibility of changes in Houston. Houston now has the inside track to the No. 1 pick in the 2014 NFL draft. Beaminster / running, with the session unaffected by red flags

BARCELONA, Spain -- FIFA president Sepp Blatter may have thought joking about Cristiano Ronaldo was all in good fun, but the Portugal forward and Real Madrid have certainly taken offence. Madrid asked Blatter on Tuesday to apologize for having mocked Ronaldo while praising Barcelona rival Lionel Messi at a recent event in England. Blatter had told an audience at Oxford University that Ronaldo "is like a commander on the field of play" before strutting around the stage to the laughs of the students in attendance. Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said that club president Florentino Perez had sent a letter to Blatter asking him to "rectify what I consider a lack of respect for a serious and professional player." Blatter later responded by saying Ronaldo was an "exceptional" player. In a statement provided to the AP, FIFA said that Blatter had "confirmed in letters sent to Real Madrid CF as well as the Portuguese Football Association that Cristiano Ronaldo is an exceptional player - as he had already mentioned at the Oxford University event last Friday, and on many other occasions." While slighting Ronaldo during the public event, Blatter said he preferred Messi, the Argentina forward who has won FIFAs world player of the year award for the past four years. Ronaldo won the award in 2008, finishing second in voting behind Messi in 2009, 2011 and 2012. Ronaldo took Blatters stinging words, and mimicry, to heart, and apparently wasnt convinced by Blatters attempt at making amends. "This video shows clearly the respect and consideration that FIFA has for me, for my club and my country," Ronaldo wrote on his Facebook page late Tuesday. "Much is explained now. I wish Mr. Blatter health and a long life, with the certainty that he will continue to witness, as he deserves, the successes of his favourite teams and players." Earlier on Tuesday, FIFA included Ronaldo and Messi on its list of 23 finalists for this years world player of the year award. The list will be pared down to three players in early December. "Messi is a good boy, that every father and every mother would like to have at home," Blatter told the Oxford crowd. "Hes a kind man, a good boy. Thats what makes him so popular, and naturally hell always get a lot of votes because he plays well and scores goals." Then, while comparing Messi and Ronaldo, Blatter made a joke about Ronaldos hair. "They dont have the same attitude and that gives life to football. One has more expenses for the hairdresser than the other but that doesnt matter," Blatter said. Ancelotti defended Ronaldos character. "I completely agree with the president (Perez)," Ancelotti said. "I havent spoken to Ronaldo about this. I think he shows every day and in every match that he is a serious and professional player that respects everyone." Ronaldo also received support in Portugal. Portuguese football federation president Fernando Gomes said Ronaldo is "often misunderstood because hes forthright and honest," and that his frankness sometimes "gives rise to a negative image which isnt him." The spat is bound to strengthen the belief among some Madrid fans and sections of the Madrid-based sports media that FIFA has a bias for Barcelona and Messi. Former Madrid coach Jose Mourinho snubbed FIFAs awards gala for the past two years while he was at the Spanish club, as did Ronaldo in 2012. Mourinho accused Barcelona of receiving help from FIFA referees in ousting Madrid from the 2011 Champions League semifinals. Throwback Kentucky Jerseys . The Scuderia were bemused to find themselves relegated to the third row of the grid for the Spanish GP, behind both Mercedes cars and both Red Bulls, and used the test as an attempt to learn lessons from Saturday. The German worked on a programme which concentrated on qualifying simulation. After the difficulties encountered at this track last Saturday, the Scuderia chose to look at that particular area of performance, said Ferrari. Lapping at a similar time of day and on soft tyres as was the case on Saturday, Vettel found just over one tenth of improvement from his time in qualifying, posting a 1:23.220. However, that time would not have been enough to improve on his grid position. It is a unique chance to test straight after the grand prix at the same track in more or less the same conditions. It is not a big secret that Saturday we struggled a bit so we tried some stuff, we need to have a good look but it is not the only thing we are here for today, Vettel told Sky Sports. He finished the day third quickest, despite the team saying they focussed on Monaco work.Todays power unit run programme consisted mainly of race set-up for the Monaco Grand Prix next weekend, said Hondas Satoshi Nakamura. The street circuit of Monaco has many slow corners which require stability in the engines low-revving range, so we focused on its driveability and the various modes of the power unit to bring out its full potential. Our plan is to continue to run similarly tomorrow. The next driver on the Red Bull junior conveyor belt is Pierre Gasly, and he was at the wheel for Toro Rosso, finishing the day seventh quickest.Unfortunately at the end of the day, when we were just about to go for some performance runs on soft tyres, we had a little issue, so we had to end the day a bit earlier than planned, said the Frenchman. But Im still pleased, as we could anyhow complete many laps today, which is always important for me to gain experience. A late run on the ultrasoft tyres catapulted Alfonso Celis Jr to eighth in the Force India, having spent most of the day at the bottom of the timesheets.Interestingly, reliability was not an issue during the eight hours of running, with the session unaffected by red flags. The test concludes on Wednesday, with the green flag at 8am BST. Beaminster / his game in a tense situation. A
« Last post by miaowang123 on January 03, 2019, 01:27:20 AM »
ARLINGTON, Texas -- While manager Lloyd McClendon is no fan of the transfer rule, he certainly has no problem challenging the application of it to get the Seattle Mariners a run. Seattle had a six-run outburst in an inning that included three Texas errors and an overturned call that led to the ejection of Rangers manager Ron Washington during the Mariners 7-1 victory Monday night. Seattle had the bases loaded in the sixth, already with four runs in, when Brad Miller hit a comebacker. Relief pitcher Pedro Figueroa threw home, and umpire Paul Schrieber initially ruled a forceout even though catcher J.P. Arencibia bobbled the ball on a transfer without dropping it or making a throw. McClendon challenged, and the call was reversed after a replay review of 3 minutes, 31 seconds. That erased the out and gave Seattle another run. "I thought it was a clear violation of the rules," McClendon said. "It was an impactful play." Asked his feeling on the transfer rule, which is being enforced more closely with expanded replay this season, the manager responded, "I wish it would all go away, but it is what it is, and we just have to deal with it." Arencibia, charged with an error, said he was off the plate before losing control of the ball. "I think thats something that baseball needs to clean up because there are a lot of plays that have happened this year that are outs and giving teams extra outs," Arencibia said. "I dont think its baseball. Outfielders who have caught the ball and run four steps after they catch it, run into the wall and turn and throw the ball in and it falls out, and automatically safe. It doesnt make sense." Roenis Elias (1-1) allowed one run and struck out five over 6 2-3 innings for his first major league victory. The left-hander, who defected from Cuba to Mexico in 2010, has a 2.16 ERA in three career starts. "I came here to make it to the big leagues. I knew I could pitch in the big leagues," Elias said through a translator. "I was throwing my pitches like I wanted. The curveball I threw today is what I normally throw." The Mariners went ahead to stay on Mike Zuninos solo homer in the fifth off Colby Lewis (0-1), who made his first big league start in 21 months after elbow and hip operations. Zunino added an RBI single in that wild sixth that started with Robinson Canos leadoff single. Cano scored on Michael Saunders triple to left-centre -- a ball that centre fielder Leonys Martin bobbled without getting charged with an error. Kyle Seager followed with an RBI single that chased Lewis, and then things got interesting. Dustin Ackley and Zunino had consecutive RBI singles after Arencibia couldnt pull in a foul ball before reaching out and teetering over a camera-well railing. Mix in two fielding errors, and the bases were loaded. Washington immediately came out to argue after the overturned call and was ejected by crew chief Ted Barrett because managers arent allowed to argue replay rulings. Washingtons ejection came a night after Boston manager John Farrell became the first big league skipper tossed under those circumstances this season. "It was obvious he caught the ball, the runner was at least 9 or 10 feet from home plate, making his move away from home plate so he dont have contact, you go to get the ball and he drops it," Washington said. "Im all for the review, but still that dont mean you have to agree with some of the calls that go on because of review." Umpires in New York confirmed the play was overturned because Arencibia never had secure possession while transferring the ball from his glove to his hand. Lewis made his first major league start since July 18, 2012, allowing four runs (three earned) over 5 1-3 innings. He struck out four and walked one. The 34-year-old Lewis had right hip resurfacing surgery last August. He is the first known major league pitcher to come back after the procedure to remove bone spurs without a full hip replacement. "Id like to thank the Texas Rangers and the organization for giving me an opportunity tonight. It wouldnt have meant as much for me to get back out there without having this uniform on," Lewis said. "Overall, I felt great. Everything was really, really good." NOTES: Seattle had gone 21 consecutive innings without a run before Zuninos third homer. ... Texas scored a single run for the third time in four games -- the others were 1-0 victories over Houston. Air Max Pas Cher . The Rays hope to stay alive for the postseason and salvage the finale of this series Sunday at Rogers Centre, where they dropped a 7-2 decision Saturday. Also, TSN.ca features live streaming of the Bell Centre viewing party in Montreal and the post-game news conferences with head coaches Michel Therrien and Alain Vigneault. Down 3-1 in their series on Tuesday, Rene Bourque notched his first career postseason hat trick as the Habs pulled out an entertaining 7-4 win in Game 5. "It was a happy moment, especially when this team was facing elimination," Bourque said. "Everyone was ready for this game in a tense situation. After they tied it, we had to settle down. We had to make it work again to bounce back. Weve been here before; we have to relax and get back to the basics instead of running around." Bourque wasnt the only prominent Canadien on the scoreboard, as Max Pacioretty and Alex Galchenyuk added a goal and assist each for the Canadiens with additional tallies from Tomas Plekanec and David Desharnais. Andrei Markov added three helpers, Lars Eller and Dale Weise assisted on a pair of scoress apiece, while Dustin Tokarski stopped 23 shots in the victory.dddddddddddd. Cam Talbot surrendered two goals on eight shots in relief of Henrik Lundqvist, who exited after yielding four goals on 19 chances. Derek Stepan returned from a broken jaw to net a pair of goals for the Rangers, who battled back from a 4-1 deficit but get another chance to close out the series on home ice in Game 6 on Thursday. The Rangers will be without the services of John Moore for the rest of the series, after the defenceman received a two-game suspension for a high hit on Montreals Dale Weise late in the third period. Former Canadiens Raphael Diaz, who hasnt played yet in this series, could draw in for Moore. Weise will not play tonight, while defenceman Alexei Emelin will be a game-time decision. Emelin missed Game 5 and was replaced in the lineup by Nathan Beaulieu. Brandon Prust, who got his own two-game ban for a similar hit to Stepan in Game 3, returns to the lineup. With 10 postseason wins, the 2013-14 Canadiens have gone further than any Montreal team in the playoffs since their Stanley Cup winning run in 1993. Beaminster / confident that he will play at Wembley

PARIS - Paris Saint-Germain could offer new recruit David Luiz something Chelsea couldnt: the near certainty of being a league winner next season. Because, more than ever, PSG is reducing Frances Ligue 1 to a no-contest. While the English Premier League and Spains La Liga were consistently nail-biting, decided only in the last round of matches, PSG made Ligue 1 feel over before Christmas. Its total of 89 points was a record. It topped the league from the 10th round to the last in winning its second consecutive title. Already, next season is shaping up as the same again. As the biggest fish in the small pond of French domestic football, PSG is going to have to succeed in Europe to really prove itself. Even limited by UEFAs Financial Fair Play sanctions, PSGs cash-rich Qatari owners can still comfortably outspend every Ligue 1 team with the exception, perhaps, of Monaco, bankrolled by Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev. Luiz is set to become PSGs fifth signing of €40 million or more. The versatile, attack-minded defender will only strengthen what already this season was again the leagues stingiest defence, conceding just 23 goals. Playing alongside Brazil teammate Thiago Silva, and because theyll be coming off the World Cup together, Luiz should slot smoothly into PSGs backline. The question is not whether PSGs domestic dominance can last, but rather if it can break Lyons record of seven straight league titles from 2002-2008. For the third consecutive season, PSG again had the most prolific attack, scoring 84 goals— 26 of them from Zlatan Ibrahimovic, again the leagues top scorer. "Ligue 1 is continuing to grow with Monaco, Lyon, Marseille. Were raising the level," Ibrahimovic said. Really? That can be argued both ways. While PSGs acquisition of global stars like Ibrahimovic has burnished the Ligue 1 brand, the ease with which he scores, the gulf in class between him and players from other clubs, reflects an unbalanced, top-heavy league with PSG out of reach for French opponents. Coach Laurent Blancs team won only two of its six matches against top-four teams. That highlighted both the fragility of PSG under pressure and its opponents erratic performances during the season. Often unwilling to take risks away from home, conservatively playing for draws, PSGs main rivals facilitated its route to the title. PSGs winning margin over runner-up Monaco was nine points, even more comfortable than its eight-point cushion over Marseille the previous season. In 2012-13, third-place Lyon finished 16 points behind PSG. This time, Lille was 18 points adrift in third. Monaco must now rebuild having sacked coach Claudio Ranieri. While his replacement will need time to adapt, Blanc will be in his second season at PSG. That stability also increases its prospects for a hat-trick of league titles. Rybolovlevs wealth and Monacos tax breaks attracted Colombia striker Radamel Falcao and countryman James Rodriguez, one of the best young wingers in Europe. But its squad remains light compared to PSGs strength in depth built over three years of Qatari ownership. Lyon, funding a new stadium, relies on talent from its youth academy and faces another difficult summer holding onto rising home-grown stars like forward Alexandre Lacazette and France midfielder Clement Grenier. Weak competition isnt necessarily good for PSG. The teams sense of security lulled Blancs players into bad habits at times, especially toward the end of the season when they went off the boil. That can be fatal against Europes top teams. Against Chelsea, PSG failed to protect a two-goal advantage in the return leg of their Champions League quarterfinal. Next season, PSGs stars must respond better when theyre pushed around in Europe or risk being written off as playground bullies in an uncompetitive domestic league. WATFORD, England -- Minnesota Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder expects to start against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday in London despite a rib injury. Ponder, injured early in last Sundays 31-27 loss to the Cleveland Browns, emerged from the Vikings first practice in the U.K. on Wednesday confident that he will play at Wembley Stadium. "Its a little sore and its going to be something I will have to work through but I threw more than I thought I would be able to," Ponder said. "Well wait to see how this week plays out, but my expectation and my hope is that I will be playing." Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said Wednesdays practice would "be a big signal in what direction well have to go," with a decision expected by Friday. Backup quarterback Matt Cassell also took snaps on Wednesday, and he is ready to step in if Ponder is unavailable to play. "My confidence hasnt wavered," said Ponder, who led the Vikings to the playoffs last season. "I have a great support staff around me with Adrian Peterson and the staff around me." Peterson said he was always ready to give Ponder a pep talk, as he did when fans at Mall of America Field began jeering the quarterback during the Cleveland loss. "Hes bouncing back," the Vikings running back said. "I told him, You know the business. You know how it goes. Just stay focused and continue to work. You know what to do." Frazier said defensive backs Chris Cook (groin) and A.J. Jefferson (ankle) would sit out Wednesdays practice, but safety Jamarca Sanford (hamstring) would take part. Fullback Jerome Felton also is returning from a three-game suspension to provide an extra blocker in the Vikings backfield. SEVILLE, Spain -- Fernando Torres and Andres Iniesta were on target as Spain dominated Bolivia for a 2-0 win Friday in the first of two international friendlies ahead of its World Cup defence in Brazil. Torres calmly stroked a 51st-minute spot kick down the middle with goalkeeper Romel Quinonez diving right to convert a penalty earned by Javi Martinez. Spain controlled play at the Sanchez Pizjuan but found it hard to convert against a well-organized Bolivian team before Iniesta charged forward to curl around Quinonez in the 84th to seal victory. Vicente del Bosque employed an experimental team, trying out different combinations with key Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid players still missing following the Champions League final last week. The Spain coach will announce his 23-man squad for next months tournament on Saturday. Despite the goal, Torres made little impact up front and failed to soothe Spains attacking worries with Diego Costas status uncertain because of thigh muscle injury. While Juan Mata and Pedro Rodriguez managed scoring opportunities, it wasnt until the second-half entrances of Iniesta, Sergio Busquets and David Silva that Spain looked more capable of scoring, with Cesc Fabregas coming on to reprise his role as an unorthodox striker. "We had an encouraging week of training and today was a positive day," Iniesta said.
